Malvern Town are on the verge of greatness.
They ended last season on 47 points, their highest-ever points’ haul at Step 4, but following Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Worcestershire rivals, Evesham United, a result which made it six League games unbeaten to leave them just outside the play-off places, they now find themselves sat on 45 points and we’re only in mid-February!
As the Pitching In Southern League Division One South club prepares to celebrate its 80th Anniversary next year, many believe that whilst they have seen their fair share of talented players represent the club over the years, this is the best-ever team to represent the club.
Playing his part following a summer switch from Swindon Supermarine is midfield man, Joe Tumelty.
“It’s been an excellent period for the team after a tricky Christmas,” Tumelty told us. “We’ve been really good as a collective and you can feel the confidence within the group now growing every game.
“We probably showed a different side to us at the weekend as we didn’t create loads of chances but we worked so hard and it was brilliant to get the three points against a side who went into the game sat in second place in the table.
“We’ve certainly showed what we are capable of this season. When we have the majority available, we can beat anyone at this level; the club has progressed on the solid foundations that were put in place last season.
“From my own point of view, the season has been a bit stop-start at times with injuries but I’m really enjoying it. There are some good teams at this level and playing on a 4G surface at home means that we’ve had a good pitch to play on all year round, which has allowed us to play a specific way that suits my game.
“We’ve also been able to adapt to away games recently too, which has helped us go on this unbeaten run.
“The run-in to the end of the season is going to be exciting, there’s no question about that. There’s plenty of football to be played and we’re looking forward to it.
“For the second Saturday in a row we’ll be at home to the team in second place in the table as we host Exmouth Town this weekend, every new game becomes bigger than the last, and as a player you want to be involved in occasions such as this.
“We’ve got a great group of lads here and it’s brilliant to be part of it. If we can keep doing the right things and adding to our points tally, we’ll see where it takes us.”
It’s looking increasingly likely that Tumelty and his team-mates will take their place in the club’s history books for their exploits this season and plans have just been announced to create a celebratory display in their clubhouse to mark their 80th Anniversary in 2026.
This initiative is led by dedicated fans, Paul Stanley and Lars Neale, with support from club chair, Chris Pinder.
The aim is to gather memories and memorabilia to create display boards, marking eight decades of the club's history. A Facebook group, called Malvern Town History Project, has been set up for people to share their memories, thoughts, and photos of the club.
"We're thrilled to embark on a journey celebrating Malvern Town's vibrant history,” said Pinder, who has overseen fantastic progression for the club during the past decade. "We invite everyone in our wonderful community – and further afield - to share their stories and memories of our beloved football club.
"Whether you've played for the team, volunteered behind-the-scenes, cheered from the stands, or have family ties to the club, we'd love to hear your unique perspective.
"Every connection, every piece of memorabilia, every anecdote adds to the rich tapestry of Malvern Town's legacy. Let's capture the spirit of this extraordinary club and record it forever."
