With two play-off places up for grabs and three teams in the running, the race to finish in the top five in the Pitching In Southern League Premier South is set to go right down to the wire.
Currently sitting in fifth place is Dorchester Town, who left it late to earn a 3-2 victory at Frome Town on Good Friday.
“It wasn’t pretty and not a particularly great game,” admitted midfielder, Matt Buse. “It was what you would describe as a hard-earned win.
“Neither team had any real control of the game; credit to our opponents because they made it difficult in tough conditions.
“But we managed to get the job done with a bit of quality when it mattered from Brett [Pitman] and at this stage of the season, that’s what counts.
“Now we look forward to another big game on Monday against a Poole Town outfit who have started to find some form to pull clear of the relegation places.
“We’ve put ourselves into a good position to achieve the objective we set out at the start of the season to achieve, promotion. There’s nothing worse at this time of the year than having nothing to play for and just letting the season fizzle out, so we’ll embrace these final two massive games.
“They’ll both be tough because after Poole we then go to Hungerford Town on the final day of the regular season.
“Hopefully we can extend our season a little bit longer; we’re under no illusions that there is a lot of football still to be played and a lot can happen. We’ll just focus on ourselves and ensuring that we get the job done.
“Personally it’s been a positive season. I’ve contributed with goals and assists and feel my performances have been good throughout the campaign.
“We have a good side here and I have just wanted to contribute as much as I can. As a collective it’s close to being a very successful season for us. I feel we have got better as the season has gone on and we have become very hard to beat.
“We have a good group of players and hopefully we can overcome the next few hurdles.
“I think for me coming into the League this season, I have seen how open it is with some very good players dotted about everywhere. Anyone can beat anyone as we have seen all season and there is no given right that you’ll turn up and win.
“The table doesn’t lie when you get to this stage of the season. Merthyr Town look like they will confirm the title on Monday and they deserve it. I was really impressed with their style of play and we’ve had two tough games against them.
“Beyond that, I don’t think there is much between the top seven or eight and it comes down to moments. I think all in all it’s a very open and entertaining League with lots of twists and turns, which, hopefully, over the next couple of weeks we can come out on the right side of.”
