Popular promotion-winning goalkeeper rewarded with new deal

As the dust settles on Merthyr Town’s Pitching In Southern League Premier South title success, popular goalkeeper, Jaimie Cogman has been rewarded for his impressive displays between the posts with a new contract.

The Australian moved from his homeland to join Cardiff City as an apprentice in 2019 before making the switch to Penydarren Park early in the 2021/22 season and becoming a popular and reliable last line of defence.

“The fans have been so good to me from the moment I first arrived at the club,” he told us. “It means so much to be able to give them a title to celebrate. They have been through so much over the years; the team has really embodied their spirit and determination this season.

“As a team we have developed so well, not just over the course of this season, but across the past three seasons. Seeing my team-mates growing as players at first-hand is unbelievable; it’s not been an overnight thing, we’ve done it over a period of time.

“Yes, we’ve got things wrong and made mistakes at times, but we are a young team and it’s been about learning and gaining consistency around our performances, which has got us to where we are now.

“It’s exciting to see what we can go on to achieve from here and it’s great to have signed a new deal so early in the close season because I can now prepare and focus on what the new season holds in store at Step 2.

“We’ve come through what is an extremely competitive Premier South. I’ve been involved in this League for the past four years and there is so much talent involved across all clubs. There’s not much between all of the teams and it’s getting stronger all of the time.

“To lift the title alongside such fantastic team-mates is something I will never forget, there’s no better feeling and its reward for all of the hard work we’ve put in. To also have 3,000 fans there to see it made it extra special.

“What a fan base we have here and it’s growing all of the time, which is great to see. There is so much for this club to look forward to and I am so proud to be part of it.”
