Pitching In Southern League Premier Central new-boys, Bury Town, are building from the back as they prepare for life at Step 3.
Popular goalkeeper, Charlie Beckwith, has committed his future to the Suffolk outfit following a campaign which saw him pick up both the Supporters’ Player of the Season and Player's Player of the Season awards as he helped the club secure promotion via the play-offs and the second-best defensive record in the Isthmian League North Division.
This will not be his first taste of life in the Southern League having previously spent time at Leiston, where he broke into the first-team at just 16 years of age and chalked up around half-a-century of appearances.
“It was a really pleasing season for me and the team,” he told us. “We came so close to gaining promotion at the end of the previous campaign, so to wrap it up this time around made it even sweeter.
“We couldn’t have done it in a more dramatic way either, winning the play-off final courtesy of a last-minute goal against Brightlingsea Regent. The scenes at the end were something that I will never forget, moments like that are what you play the game for.
“To take two awards was a real honour on a personal note. Our supporters are fantastic, the best in Suffolk, so to be their Player of the Season was fantastic and on top of that, the Player’s Player of the Season accolade is always a special one, being recognised by your peers.
“We’re really looking forward to the new challenges that lie ahead. I’m sure that there will be some tough days along the way, but we go into it with a clear style of play, a talented group of players and a group of fans that will be with us every step of the way.
“It’s difficult to know at this stage what to expect as I am sure there will be plenty of players moving around, but there are some big clubs in this League. That said, we have to focus on ourselves and continue doing what has served us so well over the past couple of years.
“If we can do that it will stand us in good stead for what’s to come. There’s also a few local derbies to look forward to, so we know the kind of quality that we will be up against.
“There are a few of us who have played in the Southern League previously and as such we have an idea of what to expect. Winning is a habit and it’s something we’ve done a lot of recently, so if we can get off to a positive start, then who knows?
“The main aim is to try and adapt to the League as quickly as we can and then take things from there. Let’s see where we are 10-12 games in.”
We’ll be getting to know more of our new teams over the days and weeks ahead as we begin our countdown to the start of the 2025/26 season.
