HARBOROUGH TOWN | PLANS IN MOTION

Statement signing, Danny Newton, ready for business

The Pitching In Southern League Premier Central is shaping up to be a mouth-watering proposition during the campaign ahead.

There have been some statement signings across the League, including at Harborough Town where former EFL front-man, Danny Newton, heads some impressive summer business by manager, Mitch Austin.

Fresh from helping Brackley Town finally make it into Step 1, Newton is looking forward to being part of the Bees’ ongoing progression as they look to build upon last season where they made the play-offs amidst their highest-ever finish.

“This is an exciting place to be considering the success of the last few years and the trajectory of the club,” Newton told us. “I’m looking forward to hopefully adding to the strong group that’s done so well.

“The manager spoke to me a while ago, but it just wasn’t the right time back then. Now everything has lined up perfectly for this season with me taking a full-time job and not wanted to train extra days or go into full-time football again, which The National League would have been had I stayed at Brackley.

“Harborough is local to me and fits perfectly for the ambitions of the club and myself, so this move really does tick a lot of boxes.

“I think there will be some strong teams, looking at the players at the level. The most consistent team will win the League, so I’m hoping that will be us, but there’s going to be plenty of competition, that’s for sure.

“I’m really enjoying it here so far. We seem to have a great group already in place and everyone is getting on well. We have the pre-season trip in Madrid to look forward to, which will be an amazing experience for everyone.

“Personally, as a striker, my job is to score goals and that’s what I’ll be focussed on doing. The main objective is to achieve promotion, so I want to be able to play my part in that. We’ll be giving everything we’ve got to be amongst the leading pack.”

As well as the club’s Spanish links, which we featured last season, this summer has also seen them agree a partnership with Bermudan football scout, Corey Hill, which will see the club identify the best young playing talent coming out of Bermuda, following in the footsteps of Jutorre Burgess and Jakeem Jennings who have both made their mark at the club.
