The sun is shining and the kids are enjoying their summer holidays, but over at Welwyn Garden City, manager, Marc Weatherstone, is feeling festive.
“I’m like a kid at Christmas right now,” he told us. “I’m counting down the days until the start of the season… people say that the break between the end of the season and start of the new one is getting shorter, but I disagree, it’s far too long!
“I’m happy with the players that I have been able to retain and those who I’ve recruited. This time is always difficult to get everyone together with holidays, injuries and things like that, but when we’ve got a full squad to choose from, we’ll be strong.
“Results over pre-season have not been great, probably because of the reasons that I have just mentioned, but the main focus has been to get minutes into legs, build up fitness levels and work on our style of play, both defensively and offensively.
“We’re going into a strong League this year, with the relegated teams only adding to the strength and I’ve no doubt that they’ll be right up there. There are also some clubs with nice budgets to work with too, so it’s going to be tough, but we’ll be ready to compete.
“First and foremost we want to be able to improve upon last season’s showing, where we finished just inside the top ten with 57 points. It we can beat that tally then that will be progress and that’s all I can ask for.”
