It was a Bank Holiday weekend to remember for Brixham AFC as they followed up their hard-earned 3-2 home victory over Larkhall Athletic on Saturday, for their first win at Step 4, with a 4-1 triumph at Devon rivals, Tavistock AFC on Monday.
Helping himself to all four of the goals in the win at Tavistock was James Moxon, the man they call ‘The Rabbit’.
“I’ve hit a fair few hat-tricks over the years, but never four,” he told us. “What a day it was and the culmination of a great Bank Holiday weekend for the team.
“We didn’t really play to our strengths against Larkhall Athletic on Saturday, if we’re being totally honest. We seemed a bit out of sorts during the first half and knew during the break that as a collective we could play much better.
“We came out for the second half strongly but then found ourselves 2-1 down after we took our foot off the gas. However, this team never gives up and we have a never-say-attitude that meant we were able to turn it around to get our first three points of the season.
“Going to Tavistock on Monday was always going to be a tough ask with such a quick turnaround, however, we started well and getting an early goal helped.
“We went on to create chance after chance and should have been three or four goals to the good only for our hosts to level things up going into the interval.
“It would have been easy for our heads to drop at this point, but we kept at it and continued to create opportunities. From a personal point of view to score all four of our goals was a real buzz; the main thing was another three points, of course, but to score four was special.
“We knew after our first couple of games at this level exactly how competitive it was going to be. We needed those early lessons, especially the first game against Shaftesbury, which was a real eye-opener and gave an indication of the levels we needed to be at all over the pitch.
“This is a tough League, no matter who the opposition are, they will cause you problems and there is no respite at this level.
“We’ve worked so hard to get here and we’ll be doing all we can to ensure that we can establish ourselves in the Southern League. As a striker, you always target 20+ goals a season, and if I can do that it will really help our chances of achieving our objectives.”
