A number of our member clubs performed giant-killing acts in the Emirates FA Cup last weekend. One of which was Wimborne Town, who defeated Bath City of The National League South by two goals to one.
Part of the winning team was young front-runner, Joe Ryan, who has returned to the Pitching In Southern League Premier South club this season as they look to build on last season’s tenth place finish in what was their first campaign back at this level.
“We had to graft hard for Saturday’s win,” Ryan told us. “It was an unreal experience to be able to showcase what we can do against higher level opponents and in front of a large crowd.
“Playing in the FA Cup means everything to me, it’s such a special competition and the rewards are there the further you go.
“Our fans were amazing at the weekend, as they have been all season. They make such a difference for us as players and we appreciate the backing that we get.”
The Magpies have taken 11 points from their seven League games so far this term, which represents a solid start.
“It’s a case of so far, so good for me and the team,” he added. “We’ve done well as a team, especially at home, where we are unbeaten at the moment. A strong home record is always important.
“Personally I am really enjoying the challenge at this level and being able to learn and progress my ability. I’ve weighed in with a few goals and assists and hopefully there are plenty more to follow as we continue to make forward strides.
“The standard at this level is very good, with a couple of teams being full-time, which has ramped up the quality. It’s an exciting League to be involved with and I am looking forward to what lies ahead for us this season as we push for a place in the play-offs and ultimately promotion.
“If I can get 15-20 goals and assists, I will be happy. I want to find a level of consistency that will see me establish a regular place in the team and make an impact.”
Ryan began his career within the youth ranks at Millbrook FC. His progress was rapid and he was playing first-team, senior football at the age of just 16.
Joining Eastleigh on a scholarship, he gained experience with the likes of Colden Common, Alresford Town and Fareham Town, whom he helped win the Wessex League Premier Division play-offs. He also had a couple of months at Wimborne Town, where he got his first taste of life at the club.
He also managed to get some first-team games at Eastleigh under his belt before making his Wimborne Town return earlier this summer.
“I couldn’t be happier to be back here,” he concluded. “These are good days for the club and I am delighted to be involved with such a progressive and forward-thinking club.”
A home game against Evesham United awaits on Saturday, whilst a home tie against Worthing is the reward in the third round qualifying of the Emirates FA Cup on September 27th 2025.
