With four goals from his last four games, Kai Sanchez Tonge is up and running for the season and that’s music to the ears of his club, Stamford AFC.
They are currently looking for their first win in the Pitching In Southern League Premier Central, but in the cup competitions they are very much alive and kicking.
On Saturday, Sanchez Tonge’s penalty saw them secure a hard-earned 1-0 victory at one of his former clubs, Sutton Coldfield Town, to make it through to the fourth round qualifying of the Emirates FA Cup, where a mouth-watering trip to National League North outfit, Macclesfield, awaits.
Meanwhile coming up this weekend, they head to Real Bedford in the third round qualifying of the Isuzu FA Trophy.
“I am super happy to be back scoring and playing well,” Sanchez Tonge told us. “There’s nothing like scoring goals and I always back myself to get on the scoresheet when I’m playing up front.
“Hopefully now that I’m up and running, this can be a season in which I get plenty of goals to my name to help the team.
“We’ve not made the best of starts in the League, as the early table shows, but our exploits in the cup competitions can help give us the kick-start we need to get things moving in the right direction.
“On Saturday we controlled the game for long periods. We could – and should – have won by a bigger margin had we taken the chances that came our way, myself included, but cup ties are all about getting through to the next round and that’s what we were able to do.
“Now we have a tough, but exciting game to look forward to at Macclesfield. They are a big club and there’s sure to be a large crowd and fantastic atmosphere. Anything can happen as you progress in the competition; I was part of the Harborough Town team that made it through to the second round proper at Reading last season and there’s nothing quite like the FA Cup.
“Scoring the late equaliser to take that tie into extra-time is something that will stay with me forever and that’s what the FA Cup can do, it can create memories that last a lifetime.
“Yes, we’ve had a tough start in the League but we’re starting to click now as a team and we have the opportunity to go on a journey together and our cup adventures can go hand-in-hand with us climbing the table.
“My aim is to keep firing the goals to get the team into the top half of the table and then we can take things from there. The last two seasons has seen the club challenging for the play-offs and there’s no reason why this can’t be the case again this season.
“There’s plenty of football to be played and plenty of twists and turns ahead, so bring it on!”
