It’s fair to say that it has been a good week at the office for Ware.
They followed up Saturday’s commanding 3-0 victory over Rayners Lane with an excellent 4-0 away win at Enfield on Wednesday evening to move to the top of the Pitching In Southern League Division One Central table.
Opening his scoring account for the season at the weekend was Herbie Townsend.
“It was a brilliant feeling to get my first goal for the club on Saturday, especially in a strong team performance that ended with three points,” he told us. “We were able to follow it up with an even better display to secure a convincing away win at Enfield on Wednesday, so things really are going well for us right now.
“Personally, I feel sharp and confident, and it’s always nice to be able to contribute, but the most important thing is how well we are playing as a unit. Everyone is doing their jobs and there’s plenty of confidence and belief throughout the group.
“I’m enjoying my football more than ever this season. After being laid low with shoulder injuries for a while it’s great to be back playing regularly again and making a contribution. As a team we’ve showed how competitive we are and I believe that with the quality and spirit we’ve got here, we can really push on this season.
“It’s a tough division, everyone knows that. There are a lot of strong and physical teams and good players throughout. You have to be at it every week or else you will get found out, but I think that we’re showing that we can be more than a match for anyone at this level when we play our football.
“There’s so much positivity around the place. Hopefully I can stay fit and continue enjoying my football. Now I have broken my scoring duck, I’d like to think that more goals will follow and I can help the team challenge at the right end of the table.”
Having cut his football teeth at Cambridge United, where he spent around a decade as part of their academy set-up, Townsend moved on to the Ware EJA, which provided a pathway into the first-team.
Injury has halted his progress since then, dislocating his shoulder three times, but his talent and ability cannot be questioned and he’s looking to showcase it on a more regular basis this term.
