Bracknell Town got the boost that they were looking for at the weekend.
Just days after their elimination from the Emirates FA Cup at the hands of lower level, Flackwell Heath, they stormed into the first round proper of the Isuzu FA Trophy thanks to a 6-3 victory over Hungerford Town.
Amongst the scorers with a brace was Joe Grant, a veteran of just over 250 appearances and more than 120 goals for the Pitching In Southern League Premier South club.
“That was more like it,” Grant told us as he looked back at the performance. “We’ve been playing some decent enough football and creating chances, but we’ve not been able to take advantage of them in recent games.
“That has been our downfall, but on Saturday we were clinical. We’re still conceding too many, though, but Saturday’s result was a step in the right direction; everyone fought hard and even when we went behind, our heads never once dropped.
“Our luck has to change and hopefully this is the beginning of an upturn in fortunes. The result will boost our confidence and, as I say, I hope it proves to be a turning point.
“We’ve had a disappointing start to the season, there’s no other way to look at it. It’s been frustrating because I know how good a team we can be. It has taken us a while to find our way, but it will get better for us.
“We’re buying in to what the Gaffer wants from us and we’re moving in the right direction.
“This is a tough League, there is some great talent within it and some really strong teams. I am hoping what I learned and experienced last year can help us progress this time around.
“Personally I am looking for 20+ goals, which has been a regular occurrence for me in my recent years. I still believe that we can turn the corner and push for a top six place.
“I am very proud of what I have achieved here over the years. I still have a lot to give to the club and want nothing more than to take Bracknell Town up to the next level before I hang up my boots.
“We’re not far from it; the foundations are being put in place on which I want to help us build and grow.”
A home tie against Banbury United of the Premier Central is the reward in the Isuzu FA Trophy later this month, whilst this Saturday sees them hit the road with the destination Plymouth Parkway.
