Ethan Wright is getting a taste for bubbly! The swashbuckling left-back added another Man of the Match award to his collection at the weekend as he played his part in a much-needed return to winning ways for Tavistock AFC.
The Devon outfit ended a run of four League games without a win by beating Bashley 1-0 to take them into double figures in terms of points in the Pitching In Southern League Division One South.
“I would say that as a team performance, Saturday was one of our best of the season so far,” Wright told us. “The togetherness and willingness to battle for each other was there for all to see.
“Those three points came as a result of a real team effort and it just shows what we are capable of.
“To be awarded the Man of the Match award has given me added confidence moving forward. There were so many worthy candidates, so to win it was nice from a personal point of view.
“Of course, we all wanted a quicker start to the season; that said, I don’t think our performance levels have been that bad at all. This is a young side and we’ve just lacked that bit of know-how and experience to be able to get something from games.
“It’s fine margins and we’ve been unlucky on a number of occasions, but our belief is building all of the time.”
Wright has stepped up to the demands of Step 4 well having joined the club from Saltash United of the Western League Premier Division last term.
“One of the first things I noticed at this level is the increase in physicality,” he added. “There is also quality across all teams, not just some, as is the case in the Western League.
“This is a very tight League and a couple of positive results can make a big difference. There are highs standards and fine margins. We’ll be looking to go to Shaftesbury on Tuesday and add to our points tally.
“Confidence is a big thing and ours is building all of the time. We want to build some momentum and really kick-on so that we can push away from the lower reaches of the table.
“I’m growing into my role at left-back and I’ve been pleased with some of the performances that I have been able to put in. It’s always nice when they get recognised but the main thing for me is to be able to make a consistent contribution to the team.”
