It’s fair to say that Taunton Town are glad to see the back of October.
Five straight defeats in all competitions left them at a low ebb, but they have embraced the new month and made the perfect start to their November schedule with a commanding 4-0 away win at Hanwell Town on Saturday.
“Saturday’s performance was, collectively, our best of the season,” said Alfie Moulden, who got his name on the scoresheet. “The boys worked extremely hard to grind out the three points and also keep a clean sheet at what is always a tough place to go to.
“It’s definitely something to kick-on from now and the standard has been set for the rest of the season.
“There’s no getting away from the fact that it’s been a challenging start to the season, particularly over the past month, but this is pretty much a new squad and sometimes it does take time for things to click into place.
“We’re working tirelessly to find a level of consistency that will get us moving in the right direction up the table.
“This is a strong League that has improved massively over the past few years. There are some big clubs battling it out and top players at every club.
“Our target is just to keep pushing up the table and ensure that we are right in the mix when it counts and hopefully I can be a big part in that.”
Also on target at the weekend was Owen Brain.
“It was important that we showed a reaction to what was a very poor October,” he told us. “We know that from 1 to 16 we’ve got it in us, it’s just about being able to do it on a regular basis and believing in each other.
“I haven’t scored as many goals as I would have liked to Taunton colours, so hopefully getting my name on the scoresheet at the weekend will be the start of plenty more goals to come from me.
“We showed as a group what we can do on Saturday. Playing like that, we can go toe-to-toe with anyone at this level and the hope now is that we can start building some momentum throughout November.
“The season started well enough but then we started to fall away and now we have to arrest this slide and use Saturday’s result and performance to get us moving again as the matches come thick and fast over the month ahead.
“There’s a lot of strong competition in the Premier South; with only two clubs getting promotion, it’s very competitive! Our aim is to build on what we started last season and mount a challenge for a place in the top five.
“With the squad and staff that we have here, we feel that we can definitely do that. Hopefully now we’ve ridden the storm and brighter days are ahead for us.”
A home encounter with Gosport Borough, one of the clubs sitting just above them on the fringes of the top five, awaits at the weekend.
