A wayward strike from Gloucester City’s King Baidoo during Tuesday evening’s Pitching In Southern League Premier South victory at Basingstoke Town ended up smashing the phone of his club’s volunteer pitch-side videographer.
A GoFundMe page set up by the club quickly raised the funds needed to purchase a replacement as the football family stepped up to the plate to help, including generous donations from the City players and Farnham Town Chairman, Harry Hugo.
“Our media team are fantastic and like to get as close to the action as they possibly can,” said Baidoo. “On this occasion they got a little too close and I have apologised to Morgan, whose phone I broke. Obviously it was unintentional as I was looking to find the top corner!”
Baidoo has been in sparkling form this season as Gloucester City once more find themselves amongst the front-runners in the table.
“I set myself very high standards and I just want to be able to help the team and make an impact wherever I can,” he added. “I think we’ve shown flashes of what we’re capable of so far this season, but we know there’s still more to come.
“Personally, I think I’m doing okay but like everyone, I want to keep improving. As a team, we’ve built a good foundation and it’s now about pushing on, finding that bit more consistency, and turning good performances into regular results.
“The standard of the Premier South is really strong this year. Every team seems capable of taking points off each other, and the level of competition has gone up again from what it was previously.
“You can’t switch off for a second in this League and that makes it challenging, but also enjoyable. You’ve got to earn every result.
“We did well on Tuesday evening to add a deserved three points to our tally and now we take it into two home games in quick succession.
“It’s an opportunity for us to strengthen our position and put down a solid base on which to build in the second half of the season.”
Baidoo and his team-mates prepare to welcome Chertsey Town at the weekend before locking horns with Farnham Town on Tuesday evening.
