There was quite a game in the Pitching In Southern League Premier South on Tuesday evening as Poole Town and Tiverton Town shared ten goals in a 5-5 draw, with all but one of the goals coming in a chaotic first half.
The game was also being streamed live on ClubberTV, where viewers were gripped by the entertainment that was unfolding before them.
“What a game of football that was,” said Tiverton Town player-manager, Asa Hall, at the end. “I have never been involved in a game that was as hectic and end-to-end as that one!
“We started really well and there were goals galore in that opening quarter-of-an-hour. The momentum kept swinging and we did well to get ourselves 3-1 up early on.
“To then go 4-3 down but wrestle it back to being 5-4 up, all by half-time, just shows the character and determination that we have amongst our group.
“It was a mad scoreline at half-time; the lads worked really hard on what is a big pitch, particularly on the back of what was another battling display in our previous game at the weekend.
“Our hosts were able to level it up again midway through the second half, but we were really pleased to be able to hold on to a point. They moved the ball well in the second half and pulled us around, but we stuck to the task in hand to get something out of the game.
“Equally, we had a few chances at the other end to win it, but we battled it out. It’s crazy to think that we’ve scored five goals away from home and still not won the game!
“That said, hopefully we can use this as a platform now to go on a little bit of a run. We’re back at home on Saturday after a whole month without a home game, so we’re looking forward to that as we come up against a Havant & Waterlooville side who, like ourselves, have had a tough start to the season.
“We’ll be looking to build upon the positives from Tuesday and also tighten up in certain areas.”
The scoring started in the second minute on Tuesday when Tor Swann put Tiverton ahead. It was cancelled out just a couple of minutes later by Shaq Gwengwe, but undeterred, Swann found the net again in the seventh minute.
Just past the quart-hour mark and Aiden Horne was able to extend the visitors’ lead to 3-1 but that soon became 3-3 with quickfire strikes from Charlie Davis and a second from Gwengwe to make it six goals in the opening 25 minutes.
The hosts went ahead for the first time through Ryan Campbell with ten minutes remaining of the opening period but the pendulum swung back in the favour of the Devon outfit when Matthew Wood and then a second from Horne made it 5-4 to the away side at the break.
Things calmed down somewhat after the break as Gwengwe completed his hat-trick in the 66th minute to level matters and that’s how it remained. The result leaves Tiverton Town still rooted to the foot of the table with eight points from their 17 League games.
