LEVERSTOCK GREEN | FOR JIM

Return to winning ways in memory of long-time supporter

It was a long time in coming, but Leverstock Green finally tasted victory in the Pitching In Southern League Division One Central at the weekend for the first time since the end of August as they beat Beaconsfield Town 2-0.

The victory was all the more poignant as the club celebrated the life of long-time supporter, Jim Doble, who recently passed away, having followed the club for over 30 years.

“It was a special day as we all came together to remember Jim,” said captain, Dan Pett, who filled in at centre back and put in a Man of the Match display in what was an unfamiliar role for him. “Some of the injured lads came back, as did some former players and we were also joined by members of Jim’s family, so this win was for him.

“The victory was certainly a long time in coming, but we fully deserved it. As a group we always get together for a drink after each game, but doing it following a win makes a massive difference!

“I was pleased with my own performance; having Browny [Steve Brown] alongside me was a big help as he guided me through the game.

“We need that win; we’ve been stuck between trying to play and going long, so we’ve been working on our patterns of play in training recently and we’re starting to see the benefits now. Hopefully we can take this into the busy schedule that lies ahead and add a few more wins to our name.

“Having a few of the more experienced lads back from injury will certainly help us and I’d like to think we can keep a few more clean sheets like Saturday.”

Pictured we see Dan Pett receiving his Man of the Match award from Jake, grandson of Jim Doble.

Leverstock Green are back in home action on Tuesday evening with the visit of Biggleswade Town.
