There’s an experienced manager who has just arrived in the Pitching In Southern League after Taunton Town appointed Gary Johnson.
The Premier South club are hoping that Johnson can guide them away from the lower reaches of the table following a stuttering first half of the campaign.
“I am always excited by a new challenge,” Johnson, whose managerial career has spanned the past 30 years, told his club’s media. “There is good passion amongst the fans here and there’s a real chance to build the club.
“My ideas and ambitions matched those of the club. There’s the basis of a decent team here and we’ve got a chance to be higher at this level. It’s important that we work towards getting into The National League South; it’s a good challenge, but a big one.
“I’ve been waiting for the right job to come up and this one really tickles my fancy.
“Hopefully we can create an entertaining team that will get supporters through the gate. I’ve been watching footage of games over the past few days and I know some of the players here already. Everyone will get a chance to impress.
“I want to see my team play with passion and the fans have a big part to play in this too. The atmosphere can win games; we appreciate and value the fans already here, but we also want to entice more to come along and join the journey.
“We’re looking forward to the test that stands before us over the festive period. It’s a chance for us to show what we can do and start climbing the table.”
Johnson famously guided Yeovil Town from non-League football to the second-tier during a highly successful period in charge of the Glovers. He has also secured promotion at Bristol City and won League titles with both Cheltenham Town and Torquay United.
On top of that, he had a two-year spell as manager of the Latvia national team, with his most recent role being as Director of Football in League Two with Cheltenham Town.
There will be a watching brief for Johnson on Tuesday evening as his new team head to Hungerford Town before playing host to Gloucester City on Saturday and then starting the New Year at Tiverton Town.
