Sam Heal looks back at a consistent campaign for the Division One South title winners

It’s a job very well done for Frome Town. Crowned champions of the Pitching In Southern League Division One South on Monday, the same day as they burst through the 100-point barrier.

For Sam Heal, it’s the culmination of months of hard work and determination.

“To be a title winner feels unbelievable,” he told us. “All of the hard work we have put in since pre-season has paid off.

“We’ve come out the other side of what was a tough time for the club with a League title, which makes it extra special and is a just reward for everyone involved with the club.

“A lot of sacrifices have been made along the way, but it’s all worth it now.

“It can be tough the first season after relegation, but we quickly moved on and set about the task of bouncing straight back. The new signings quickly and seamlessly integrated into the group and we didn’t look back from there.

“There have been a lot of ups this season, and a few downs, naturally, but we’ve stayed consistent and that’s what makes this group so special.

“As I say, there have been plenty of high spots over the course of the campaign, but the real turning point for me was the last gasp victory over Malvern Town. We found ourselves behind but then got back on level terms before the skipper found the net for a late winner.

“That result gave us an extra cushion leading into the final stretch and we didn’t look back from there, to be honest.

“This is a tough division, there’s no doubt about that, and there hasn’t been an easy game all season no matter who we have come up against.

“We’ve been able to grind out so many good wins, even when we’ve not been at our best, and that has been key to this title win, which we will now savour before the hard work starts all over again in readiness for life back in Step 3.”

Trips to Exmouth Town and Melksham Town follow before they end the season at home to Portishead Town.
